A 21-one-year-old trainee pilot from the government-run Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRUA) was killed after the four-seater aircraft he was flying crashed in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh on Monday morning.

Officials of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said that the aircraft belonging to IGRUA was a TB-20 with registration number VT-IGE. “The aircraft operating a solo cross country flight from Fursatganj to Maho has crashed (met with accident) at village Nizamabad, district Azamgarh. The sole occupant on board the aircraft has died in the air crash. The aircraft was to overfly Maho and come back,” a senior official of the aviation safety regulator said.
Officials on ground suspect the aircraft crashed due to bad weather. The small plane crashed into a farmland around 11.30 am, Rajesh Kumar, District Magistrate of Azamgarh, told news agency Press Trust of India.

“The plane had taken off around 10.30 a.m. from a training institute and was being controlled by a trainee pilot. There was only one person on board,” Kumar added.

The pilot has been identified as Konark Sharan, 21, a resident of Palwal in Haryana, a spokesperson of the training institute said. The aircraft belonged to the government-run Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRUA), located in Amethi, officials confirmed.

According to the IGRUA website, the Trinidad TB-20 Aircraft is used for initial flying training and is a delight to fly. It is fitted with retractable undercarriage, a variable pitch propeller and most advanced avionics like Instrument Landing System, Distance Measuring Equipment, VHF Omnidirectional Radio Range, RNAV transponder and Global Positioning System. These Navigation aids help in honing the flying skills required for future sophisticated planes, the IGRUA site says.
