Fly Only With Modified PW Engines, Says DGCA

There will be no more extensions given. As another step to towards enhancing air safety in the country and leaving nothing to chance, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Monday asked IndiGo and GoAir not to fly any aircraft without both neo engines modified.

The move will affect GoAir which unlike IndiGo still flies some aircraft with one modified and one unmodified engine each. Union Civil Aviation Minister (Independent Charge) Hardeep Singh Puri Tweeted to say that IndiGo has 134 Airbus 320/321 aircraft in its fleet all of which now have modified engines. GoAir, he said had 46 aircraft with neo engines, of which both engines have been modified in 30 aircraft.

Government officials said that the move is likely to impact 16 aircraft in total, all of which belong to GoAir. Earlier, on May 30, the aviation regulator had extended the deadline for replacing Pratt & Whitney unmodified engines on the Airbus 320 neo fleet of IndiGo and GoAir by three months which ended on August 31, 2020.

Pratt & Whitney had identified fracture of the MTF piston seal as the cause of 50 per cent of engine failures. These Pratt & Whitney engines-powered A320 neo planes in the fleets of IndiGo and GoAir have been facing glitches both mid-air and on-ground since their induction way back in 2016.

Earlier in March this year, it was reported that Pratt & Whitney was in the process of establishing a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Mumbai. “This will significantly reduce the time taken for the upgrade. The facility is expected to be operational by the end of February,” DGCA had said.
