Indian Air Force’s Mi-17 helicopters were again the heroes of the day. Earlier this week they were out flying the brave Garud Commando teams in flood-hit Madhya Pradesh working alongside national and state disaster relief forces for flood rescue and relief work.
In separate rescue missions on the August 29 weekend, a group of people, including woman and children, were rescued from Somalwada village of Sehore district – a short drive away from state capital Bhopal – while a stranded man and his pet dog were safely evacuated in Belkhera, Chhindwara using a Mi-17 chopper by IAF’s Garud commandos as rains continued to batter Madhya Pradesh.

However, two Air Force helicopters that were coming to Hoshangabad, Sehore and Raisen districts had to return due to bad weather.
Rainfall has been 25% more than normal in August, which India Meteorological Department (IMD) is the highest for the month in 44 years. The previous highest in August was recorded in 1983, when rain was 23.8% more than the normal.
At least 24 people have lost lives due to flooding in Madhya Pradesh and Odisha. and thousands left displaced as heavy rainfall lashed other parts of India, causing reservoirs to overflow.
