Q) Do you have any chance of surviving a plane crash ?

A) After the crash landing of Asiana Flight 214, it seemed incredible that 304 of 307 people on board survived. But that’s in line with numbers from the National Transportation Safety Board, which show that 95% of passengers involved in accidents on US carriers between 1983 and 2000 survived. (An “accident” is an event “in which any person suffers death, or serious injury, or in which the aircraft receives substantial damage.”) That’s thanks to strict regulations that make sure modern planes are fire-resistant, easy to evacuate, and capable of going through major trauma without falling apart.

Q) Will a lightning strike take your plane down ?

Did you know ? #14 AviatorsbuzzA) While tropical weather conditions over vast stretches of ocean may not be the best conditions for flying, there’s really nothing to fear regarding lightning, says Boland, who has flown on aircraft that have been hit by lightning at some point or other. “Our newest aircraft was struck by lightning within one week,” and sustained no lasting damage. Most crew members are actually oblivious to lightning strikes thanks to lightning wicks that are built into the wings and tail to dissipate the electricity.
