ELT is an emergency beacon used in aircraft to alert rescue authorities and to indicate the location and the identification of an aircraft in distress.
- Activated manually or automatically by immersion in water or high G-force on impact.
- Operates on both 406 MHz and 121.5 MHz.
- Transmits signal every 50 seconds for at least 24 hours, detected by the COSPAS-SARSAT satellite network anywhere in the world.
- Typically installed as far aft in the fuselage of an aircraft. 6-ELTs must be inspected within 12 months periodically.
The detection and location of an aircraft crash is vitally important to the search and rescue (SAR) teams and to potential survivors. Studies show that while the initial survivors of an aircraft crash have less than a 10% chance of survival if issue is delayed beyond two days, the survival rate is increased to over 60% if the issue can be accomplished within eight hours. For this reason, Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELT) are required for most general aviation aircraft. ELT are designed to emit signals on the VHF and UHF bands thereby helping search crews locate aircraft and facilitate the timely rescue of survivors.
