In a bizarre story a young and dedicated 21-year-old air traffic controller sacrificed his life to save the lives of hundreds of passengers. The air traffic controller named Anthonius Gunawan Agung was on duty at the ATC doing his job, guiding airplanes to land and depart into Mutiara Sis Al Jufri Airport in Palu, Indonesia, when an earthquake measuring 7.5 on the richter scale struck the island.
Agung’s fellow aircraft controllers who were working with him ran for their lives when the control tower started swaying and walls began to crack, but he stayed back to make sure Batik Air Flight 6321 which was on the runway at that time got airborne with all passengers safely. Yohannes Sirait, spokesman for Air Navigation Indonesia said, “He gave clearance for this flight, and if he left his post before the plane was airborne, hundreds of people inside the plane might be in danger.” He added that the decision cost him his life, but potentially saved hundreds of others. He sacrificed his life as the ATC crumbled immediately after take off, only then did he jump off the 4th floor of the tower, in the process breaking his leg and suffering internal injuries. He breathed his last at a nearby hospital that his colleagues rushed him to, before he could be airlifted to another hospital.
He was hailed as a Hero for not even considering saving his own life but making sure that the others were safe. Hats off to him, such courage and sacrifice is definitely a rarity in todays bizarre world!
